“The first thing I loaded up on the SUBPAC was a Mala tune. The SUBPAC brought back memories of a dark and pounding Plastic People, a place that motivated me to become a DJ and Producer. It is now a vital part of my studio setup and I am finally able to feel those frequencies that are so vital to my music. It’s brought the club to my home without the deafening after effects.”
Producer/DJ Ikonika (Sara Abdel-Hamid) is a key member of the Hyperdub roster, one of the premier dubstep labels. Prior to releasing her first album, 2010’s Contact, Love, Want, Have, she released a handful of 12″ singles on Hyperdub, as well as one on Planet Mu, and she also remixed tracks by Mujava (“Township Funk”), the Brown Acid (“Bastard Kids”), and Egyptrixx (“The Only Way Up”).
Though most of her productions incorporated some mischievous (if emotive) combination of battering drums, crisp percussion accents, bleep-streaks, and affecting synthesizer textures, no two sounded alike. She co-founded the Hum + Buzz label, where she released the Aqueous Cream (2010) and I Make Lists (2012) EPs prior to reappearing on Hyperdub with her second album, the stylistically varied but sternly focused Aerotropolis (2013)
