Q+A with Tyler Scott
+ SUBPAC Social Media Manager
+ Producer, Songwriter, DJ + Creator
Q. How did you get interested in music + tech?
A. I come from a musical family. My dad and uncle are the lead singers of an r&b group called The Whispers and my mom was a dancer on Soul Train, so for my entire life music has been a central theme. I have felt called to create music ever since I can remember, however, I was plagued with shyness growing up so it wasn’t until my late teenage and young adult years that I began to take music seriously and share my creations with others.
Q. Who are your favorite women in music + tech? What qualities do you admire about them?
A. Missy Elliott. Best to ever do it. I admire her originality, confidence, and willingness to be different.
Q. What inspires you?
A. Life, life’s lessons, nature, loved ones, traveling, connecting with spirit…
Q: You are undoubtedly busy, how do you take care of yourself and maintain a good mental health?
A. I am a very spiritual person, so I always turn to my spiritual practice to help me remain centered and grounded. I take time to move slow, breathe deep, meditate, journal, move my body, listen to music that makes me feel good, and perform candle rituals to help bring myself back into balance.
Q. What helped you navigate your way through a male-dominated industry?
A. I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by people (men and women) in the industry who have been very supportive of women’s advancement in music. I’ve had a lot of support and guidance from friends and colleagues which has helped me tremendously in navigating this field.
Q. What do you wish you knew before you started out?
A. One thing I wish I had a better understanding of when I started out would be how to listen to myself. How to trust my own feelings and judgements about things and not feel so inclined to get direction from others. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that everyone’s path is unique. The only person who knows what’s best for you is you. Having a solid connection with yourself and feeling empowered to trust yourself is key.
Q. What’s the future of music and tech?
A. I feel like music and technology are merging in new and exciting ways that will make for a bright future. I am particularly excited to keep an eye on music + gaming and all the advancements with VR. I am also excited about the ways in which music + tech are combining to create new advancements in the health & wellness space.
Q. What are you working on now…anything exciting coming up you want to share? 🙂
A. This year I am excited to be reintroducing myself as a creator. I have been working on new music under the alias TILLA, and I am really excited to share what I have been working on. I am also really excited to be finishing up my book and sharing it with the world. The book is called SOL (Sounds of Life) and it is an attempt to reconnect humanity with the essence of life through our innate understanding of music and sound. Stay tuned!
